Production Craft

B-roll is the difference between a call and a film.

Viewers cannot tell you what B-roll coverage is, but they feel it in half a second. Production craft is the invisible line between content that looks like a brand and content that looks like homework.

What it costs you to miss it

  • Weak B-roll coverage makes even great ideas feel cheap — and the viewer blames the product, not the file.
  • Every skipped step returns as re-shoots, re-edits and 'can we fix it in post'.
  • The feed becomes visually random, so nothing is recognizable in the scroll.
  • Talented people waste hours on problems a process would have prevented.

How professionals execute it

The commitments behind a working B-roll coverage.

  • I will implement the light discipline
  • I will implement the audio first
  • I will implement the cut for retention
  • I will implement the caption craft

The playbook, topic by topic

01

Light discipline

Use light deliberately: face brighter than background, consistent temperature, no mixed sources fighting on skin.

Actions to take

  • Place the key light before the camera
  • Match bulbs to one temperature
  • Flag or kill any source hitting the lens

Consideration: Consistency beats beauty — a repeatable good look outperforms an occasional great one.

02

Audio first

Protect dialogue above everything: close mics, quiet rooms, levels checked before the take — because viewers forgive pixels, never mud.

Actions to take

  • Mic within thirty centimeters of the mouth
  • Record room tone for the edit
  • Monitor with headphones during capture

Consideration: If audio fails, re-record — no filter repairs a bad room.

03

Cut for retention

Edit against the retention curve: kill dead air, front-load the promise, end before the goodbye — the file should feel shorter than it is.

Actions to take

  • Remove every second that delays the promise
  • Punch-in on the word that carries the point
  • End on the payoff, not the outro

Consideration: Watch the cut muted once — if it holds silent, it holds.

04

Caption craft

Burn captions from the transcript, styled to the brand, placed clear of platform UI, checked by a human for names and numbers.

Actions to take

  • Generate from the word-level transcript
  • Style captions inside the safe area
  • Proof names, prices and numbers by eye

Consideration: Auto-captions without review will eventually misspell the one word that matters.
